January 11, 2005Virginia B. Christiansen Hoberecht 1936-2005 DERBY — Virginia B. Christiansen Hoberecht, 68, died Jan. 8. She was born June 4, 1936, in Great Bend. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary in Clearwater. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Derby. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Elsie Christiansen; brothers, Andrew and Leslie; and sisters, Goldie and Patsy. Tribune Jan. 11, 2005 Van Doubek 1924-2005 PRATT — Van Doubek, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at Pratt Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Pratt County, he was born July 29, 1924, at Coats, the son of Van and Fannie V. Street Doubek. He graduated from Coats High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as sergeant with the 509th Composite Group under Col. Paul V. Tibbetts in the Pacific Theater, where his squadron delivered the first atomic bomb to the Enola Gay on Tinian Island. On June 4, 1949, he married Ellen Louise Hamar in Pratt. She preceded in death on Sept. 29, 1994. He worked for Lion Oil Company and later owned Doubek Monument Company. Following his retirement he was active with RSVP as a bus driver. Mr. Doubek was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pratt and V.F.W. Post No. 1362. He was a member and past Grand Master of Kilwinning Lodge No. 265, receiving his 50 year pin in 2004. He is survived by one son, Robert Van Doubek of Denver, Colo., and two daughters, Nora Jean Shorock of Great Bend and Carol Ann Lewis of Castle Rock, Colo; three grandsons, James Butler of Goddard, Tom Shorock of Lawrence, Kent Holder of Salina; and two great-grandchildren, Raquel and Robert Butler of Goddard. He is also survived by three brothers, Doyle Doubek of Bella Vista, Ark., Dr. Herbert Dale Doubek of Belleville and Edwin Doubek of Hoisington. Kober, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Good Samaritan Center of Hays. She was born March 9, 1913, in rural Bison, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Appel Schwindt. Mrs. Kober was a two-year resident of Hays, moving there from La Crosse, where she had been a resident since 1973. She was a homemaker. She married William Charles Kober on Aug. 30, 1938, in Greely, Colo. Mrs. Kober loved to cook, bake, sew, and read. She especially enjoyed family gatherings. Survivors include one daughter, Judith K. Case and her husband, Roy L. Case of Hays; two grandchildren, Tonya Norton of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nicholas “Nick” Case of Carlsbad, N.M.; three great-grandchildren, Camden Case, and Shae Case, both of Carlsbad, N.M., and Joshua Case of Hays. Tribune Jan. 11, 2005 January 9, 2005James Edward Behrens 1932 - 2005 ANTHONY — James Edward Behrens, 72, died Jan. 6 at his home in Anthony. He was born Aug. 1, 1932, in Junction City, the son of Orla Frederick and Mae Ruth (Abbie) Behrens. He married Donna Dianne Woodman Nov. 4, 1982, at Wichita. He was a retired truck driver. Survivors include his wife, Donna, of the home; a son, James L. Alley of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter, Linda Kay Giddings and her husband Virgil of Anthony; his mother, Mae Behrens of Great Bend; a brother, Fred Behrens and his wife, Dorothy, of Great Bend; and five grandchildren. (Wheat) Smith, 60, died Jan. 5. A celebration of her life took place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the home of Mrs. Smith and her husband, Larry, 2802 W. Savannah, Wichita. She was born Nov. 8, 1944, in Blythville, Ark., the daughter of William and Ollie Wheat. She received an associate of applied science degree from Boise State University. She married Larry D. Smith Feb. 20, 1987, in Miami, Okla. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Larry, of the home; four daughters, Becky Canaday and her husband Wes of Towanda, Deena Olson and her husband Vincent of Nashville, Tenn., Denita Freeman and her husband Randy, and Deljean Jacob and her husband Brad, all of Wichita; three sons, Tate Smith and his wife Karen, Wichita, Aaron Smith and his wife Stephanie of Westminster, Colo., and Tim Poage; and 14 grandchildren. He was born Jan. 26, 1925, the son of Robert and Phoebe Jantzen Klotz. A lifetime area resident, he had worked in the oilfield for Sun Oilwell Cementing and Baker Hughes. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a pharmacist mate in the Navy during World War II. Survivors include two sons, Douglas E. Klotz of Modesto, Calif., and Donald Joe Klotz of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; three daughters, Carol J. Durant and Mary J. Irick, both of Great Bend, and Annette M. Moore of Wichita; two brothers, Robert Klotz of Hays and Eddie Klotz of Lawrence; two sisters, Mildred Spratt of Wilson and Roberta Coon of Wichita; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Tribune, Jan. 9, 2005 Lucille “Lucy” Virginia (Fulton) Moore 1918 - 2005 Lucille “Lucy” Virginia (Fulton) Moore, 86, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. Lucille was born to Henry Francis and Maggie Mae (Bechtol) Fulton on Oct. 17, 1918, in their home north of El Dorado. Lucille was the fourth of six children including Helen Elizabeth, Wilbur Leroy, Robert Bryce, Kathryn Mabel and James Eugene. She attended elementary and middle school in El Dorado and Augusta, moving with her father’s work in the oilfields. She graduated from high school in Eureka. In Eureka she met Glenn Homer Moore. Lucille moved with her family to Augusta and Glenn soon followed. Glenn and Lucille were married in a double-wedding ceremony with her sister Helen at her parents’ house in El Dorado on May 26, 1940. Glenn worked as a salesman for Mobil, moving them from Augusta, Wichita and Arkansas City. In Wichita, on March 2, 1943, the light of their lives was born, Glynes Ann. Glenn’s Air Force service took them to Coffeyville and to Fort Worth, Texas. Lucille lovingly cared for their only daughter and was a lifelong homemaker. They called Wichita home while Glynes attended elementary school. In 1957 Glenn purchased a Mobil station and the family moved to Medicine Lodge. The Moores were active in the community including the Presbyterian Church and were supporters of the Peace Treaty Pageant. Lucille was a 25-year member of the TOPS Club. In 1993 Lucille and Glenn moved to Great Bend to be near their daughter. Glenn died March 22, 1997. Lucille accompanied her daughter regularly to attend her great-grandchildren’s various activities. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Robert and Gene Fulton, two sisters, Kathryn Taylor and Helen Reed, and one great-grandson, Casey James Weis. She is survived by her daughter, Glynes Ash of Great Bend; one brother, Wilbert Fulton of Waco, Texas; two granddaughters, two great-granddaughters and six great-grandsons. JOHN — Ella Mae Julian, 95, died Jan. 5 at Leonardville Nursing Home, Leonardville. She was born May 7, 1909, at rural Macksville, the daughter of William Daniel and Susie Cathrine (Hilliard) Burns. She married Chesley “Chet” Julian on June 5, 1929. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and spent most of her life in St. John. Julian was a member of the Nazarene Church, Stafford, and Rebekahs of St. John. Survivors include a son, Leonard W. Julian of Milford; a daughter, Lorna Wilcox, Casper, Wyo.; and 16 grandchildren. Karst on Nov. 13, 1949, at Milberger. He died July 9, 1965. She married M.E. Marmie on Oct. 17, 1968, at Great Bend. He survives, of the home. She was a lifetime resident of Great Bend, and was a retired office manager for Marmie Ford, Great Bend. Marmie was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Progress Club, all of Great Bend. Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Kent Karst, and his wife Marilyn of Wichita; three daughters, Connie Karst-Petersen and her husband Einer of Los Angeles, Jeanne Doonan and her husband Warren of Hoisington, and Kristy Stalcup and her husband Richard of Great Bend; a brother, Richard Clay of Mineral Wells, Texas; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson; two stepsons, David Marmie and Jerry Marmie, and a stepdaughter, Karen Keller Becker, all of Great Bend; seven stepgrandchildren and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren. She was born Nov. 28, 1911, the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Curtis) Grunder in rural Stafford County. She graduated from Antrim High School and received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from the University of Kansas. She married Lloyd K. VanWinkle on Aug. 22, 1935, at McCracken. He preceded her in death. She was a high school and grade school teacher. VanWinkle was a member of the Byers Methodist Church, DAR, Stafford, Order of the Eastern Star and EHU, both of St. John, and Byers Mothers Club, Byers; United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include a son, Kenneth R. Riedel, 91, died Jan. 5 in Yuma, Ariz. He was born Dec. 8, 1913, at Olmitz, the son of Frank and Cecelia Gleisner Riedel. He married Rose E. Kaiser on Jan. 14, 1939, at Olmitz. A longtime Ellinwood resident, he was an Ellinwood city employee from 1939 to 1976, retiring as power plant superintendent. He later served as a consultant in the power plant industry. Riedel was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellinwood, and the Knights of Columbus No. 1187, which he served as Grand Knight, 1962-64. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Jim Riedel and his wife Sharon of Eagle Rock, Mo., and Darrell Riedel and his wife Joyce of Kingman, Ariz.; a daughter, Shirley Wombacher and her husband Pat of Bullhead City, Ariz.; one sister, Marie Huslig of Claflin; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Riedel, Bernard Riedel and Tony Riedel. She was born Nov. 8, 1965, at Ellinwood, the daughter of Alice Sue Carpenter Osborn. She was a 1984 graduate of Ellinwood High School. She married Charlie Ryan Dittrick on June 18, 1993, at Great Bend. A resident of McPherson for the past six years, formerly of Great Bend and Ellinwood. She was a certified medication aide for Sterling House, Cedars and Lakeside of McPherson. Dittrick was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in McPherson. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Charlie Ryan Dittrick III, Christopher George Dittrick and Alexander James Dittrick, all of the home; one brother, Nicky Osborn of Topeka; and her mother of McPherson. Tribune, Jan. 6, 2005 Marilyn Jane Nelson 1927-2005 Marilyn Jane Nelson, 77, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Great Bend, died Sunday, Jan. 2, at University Medical Center, Tucson, Ariz. She was born Aug. 2, 1927, at Great Bend. The daughter of William F. Johnson and Irma Trester Johnson. She was a 1945 graduate of Great Bend High School and from the University of Kansas in 1949. Mrs. Nelson was a homemaker and a Kansas newspaperwoman. During the 1950s and 1960s she worked for the Harper Advocate, the Hoisington Dispatch and the Emporia Times. She was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church, Green Valley, and the church’s Network of Caring. Survivors include three sons, Thomas Bolitho and wife Bree, of Ada, Okla., Mason Bolitho of Tempe, Ariz., and Barton Bolitho of Tucson; and five grandchildren, Jason Bolitho, Michael Bolitho, Sarah Bolitho and Samuel Bolitho, all of Ada, and Robin Bolitho of Tempe. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.A. Nelson; her parents; and a grandson, John Bolitho. Memorial services are at 1 p.m. today, at Valley Presbyterian Church. Tribune, Jan. 6, 2005 * Elsie Irene Miller 1910-2004 A memorial service for Elsie Irene Miller, who died Dec. 24, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Community of Christ, on North Washington, Great Bend (formerly Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). Mrs. Miller was 93. She died at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. She was born Dec. 31, 1910, at Ash Grove, the daughter of Harry O. and Irene Warren Horner. She married Robert “Bob” N. Miller in April 1955 at San Antonio, Texas. He died April 12, 1975. A homemaker, she was a resident of Great Bend since 1994, coming from Albert. Miller was a member of the Community of Christ in Great Bend, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Central Kansas Association of the Visually Impaired. Survivors include two brothers, Ralph Horner of Great Bend and Everett Lee Horner of Goshen, Ind. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Otto J. Horner and Harry Horner. Tribune, Jan. 6, 2005 Roy Dean Graves PARIS, Texas — Due to inclement weather, Kansas services for Roy Dean Graves, 59, of Paris, Texas, who died on Jan. 2 at Paris Regional Medical Center, have been postponed. A luncheon and visitation scheduled to be held at the senior center in Waldo, Kan., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., a memorial service scheduled for 1:15 p.m. and burial scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Cole Cemetery in Waldo, all on Friday, have been moved to Saturday. She married LeRoy Schad on Aug. 13, 1960, at Wichita. He survives. A homemaker, she worked at the nursing home in St. John and at the Dominican Convent Infirmary in Great Bend. He was born April 1, 1938, in La Crosse, the son of Oliver Lester and Eva Marie Burwell Wilhelm. He married Diane Barbara Harris on June 21, 1959, at Clinton Park, N.Y. She survives. He was a power plant operator for Midwest Energy for over 30 years. He was a resident of Great Bend since 1962, coming from La Crosse. Mr. Wilhelm was a Veteran of the United States Air Force serving with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, American Legion, all of Great Bend. He was a member of Family Motor Coach and Good Sam’s Club. Fair Jr. 1926 - 2004 ENTERPRISE — Raymond G. Fair Jr., 78, died Dec. 31 at the Enterprise Estates Nursing Center in Enterprise. He was born Dec. 13, 1926, at Abilene, the son of Raymond G. and Daisy Mae (Whitaker) Fair. He attended local schools and Abilene High School. He married Mary Lou Guyle in Junction City on Nov. 22, 1946. They lived in Abilene and he worked for the Abilene Reflector-Chronicle as a pressman and make-up man for 34 years. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University and his doctorate from Northwestern University near Chicago. A former Great Bend resident, he had lived in Little Rock for 27 years. He was a college professor and counselor for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Hughes, 63, died Dec. 31 at his La Crosse home. He was born Dec. 12, 1941, at Marceline, Mo., the son of Harvey Roland and Theda Virginia (Still) Hughes. He graduated from Marceline (Mo.) High School with the Class of 1959. He married Genita Solomon Sept. 1, 1991, in Sheridan County, Mo. He was a retail salesman and had lived in La Crosse for 13 years, moving here from Great Bend. Hughes was a member of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Genita, of the home; a son, William Roland Hughes, of Jefferson City, Mo.; a daughter, Kimberly Ann Dorrell of Marceline, Mo.; three brothers, Rex Allan Hughes of Macon, Mo., Kim William Hughes of Marceline, Mo., and Rand Phillip Hughes of Minnesota; two sisters, Patricia Linn Couch of Chicago and Holli Kay Dowell of St. Louis; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys (Smith) Hughes, a brother, Gene Richard Hughes, and a sister, Kathy Virginia Hughes. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in La Crosse, with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Marceline, Mo. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today, Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse; or from 8 to 8:50 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse.
