TO EUREKA

My brother, Bob, taking an imaginary drive in the Essex
Bob and the Essex
Back in 1923 when we left El Dorado, we went to Eureka for a few months where Dad filled in at an abstract office. Since this was only a temporary stay, we lived in an apartment. The only thing I actually remember at Eureka occurred one day when Mother needed to go shopping for a while and left Bob in charge of me. Soon after she left, he dropped onto sleep, and I played very, very quietly so he wouldn't wake up before Mother came home. I wanted to show her that I had reversed the situation and was taking care of him. This little example of sibling rivalry worked out just as I planned it.

Actually I do remember one other incident (although I have tried to forget it). Bob's favorite pastime was teasing me. He would keep it up until I was in tears and than tease some more. I was at a loss as to how to get back at him. He was so much bigger than I was. Then it came to me—I just grabbed his arm and bit it. There is a part of me that regrets this savagery on my part, but then there is still a small voice that whispers, "But he brought it on himself."
