Our 2006 Trip to Newfoundland
Village Mall
As in 2005, we did not rent a car although we spent two weeks in St. John's. Instead, we used our feet, the ubiquitous taxis and the Metrobus system. Considering the relatively low population (100,000), the city's bus system is better than you'd expect. The system appears to have been designed on a hub-and-spoke system, much as are most airlines today. Each route either begins or ends at one of a few major locations, such as Village Mall. We stayed near Military Road and most of the bus routes on Military Road terminated at Village Mall where one could transfer (for free) to another line, thus taking us to any part of the city. For our first ten days, we often went to the Village Mall and then left immediately on another bus. Finally, on August 8th, we made it our destination, had supper nearby and spent an hour shopping inside and found it to be an attractive one. Each December, shoppers fly to St. John's from Iceland to shop at the Village Mall and the Avalon Mall.
