Stray fire consumes two tents

Two people were injured and two tents were destroyed Thursday night when a campfire at the Walnut Valley Festival burned out of control.

According to a report from the Winfield Fire Department, a person was filling a lantern at 9:43 p.m. in the Pecan Grove and accidentally spilled a can of lighter fuel. The fuel spread to the campfire, causing a larger fire and setting two tents on fire. It was eventually put out by a person who had a five-gallon container of water.

Jeanna Casey, Bazine, and Harry Congdon, Enid, Okla., were both burned while trying to put out the fire. They were treated by Winfield Area Emergency Medical Service at the scene.

The tents were owned by Jim Stinson, 1311 Kickapoo Court, and Jona Shaw, LaCrosse. They were valued at $100 and $200, respectively, according to the report.
