Many people have tried to define storytelling and several groups and organizations have given elaborate definitions based on their experiences and affiliations. The truth of the matter is that we don't need an elaborate definition for storytelling. This powerful art form is many different things to different people. To some musicians, a story is a song. To people like my great grandmother telling a story was a discipline strategy. To me, storytelling is educating and/or entertaining myself and others through telling a story. It really is as simple as that Storytelling is telling a story. Everyone knows what that means, but what everyone doesn't know is the awesome power of a story. On September 11, 2001, our country was attacked by terrorists. The stories that came out of such a horrible experience brought our nation together like nothing else has ever done. Stories are for people of all ages and come from many cultures. It is often said that children and adults retain information better and longer when it is given in story form as opposed to lectures or a list of facts.
If there are stories that have made a positive difference in your life, please let us know about them.
You, too, can be a part of the storytelling movement whose community is constantly growing.
