Long-Distance Trains

The Phoebe Snow

I also took the E-L out to Chicago on several occasions. I attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, so I made a couple of round-trips per year between New Jersey and Kansas. Since the E-L was ten dollars cheaper than the Pennsy or NYC on the trip to Chicago. I usually took the E-L and enjoyed every minute of it. To me, it was an added benefit that the E-L took 24 hours (compared to 18 hours on the others) meaning that I had more time on the train.
One reason they were cheaper is that they used older equipment - especially during the Christmas rush.

Before making my first trip, I wrote to the E-L and asked for a set of menus, so I'd be able to budget for the meals on the trip. Those menus make interesting reading today:

The best trip, though, was on June 6, 1963.
