Don's Philately Page
Like my interest in railroading, stamp collecting (philately) has been a mild, but
life-long interest of mine.
My mother collected stamps as a girl. When I grew up, she gave me her
collection, giving me a good start.
My uncle, whom we called Uncle Bunny (his real first name was
Bannatyne), worked at a firm that imported lace from France. They'd send
samples by airmail. Those samples made heavy packages by international airmail
standards, so I got a lot of high-denomination French stamps in the 1950's.
I also bought stamps at a store in Newark, New Jersey and attended the FIPEX
in New York City as a boy. Eventually, the collecting faded, but I was always
attentive to stamps on letters and would accumulate them. I'd also use them in
mail to my parents and they always kept them. That's why I have
some relatively rare used stamps from the 1960's-1980's.
When my son, Tom, was about ten years old, I broke out the collections, and
we've shared a collection ever since. For a year, I was president of the
local stamp club, the Cheyenne Stamp Club. As he got old
enough, Tom got elected vice president. Then the then-president moved,
leaving Tom in charge of the club. He's been re-elected president every
year since.
Our US collection is rather complete, except for those we can't afford. We've
had a rather general worldwide collection, but take little interest in stamps
since 1960 or so.
We have numerous duplicates and aren't really pursuing the hobby that much
any more. Instead of swapping, we enjoy giving stamps to children or disabled
persons who don't have the financial resources to develop their own
collections. If you are in one of these categories, we'd be glad to dig through our duplicates and find some things to add to your collection. Please be specific about your taste in stamps, so we can try to
send the things you'd most enjoy. Since we can't e-mail the stamps to you,
please include your "snail mail" address! We'll even
try to use neat stamps when we mail them to you. You can e-mail me at: don@shorock.com. Return to Don Shorock's home page.
