April 2007 trip to NJ Ottawa, KansasAn afternoon with TomMy son, Tom, drove the 25 miles from Lawrence to Ottawa, so I spent most of the first afternoon of my trip with him.Ottawa University campusI did spend some time looking at the landmarks of the campus where I earned my first college degree when I came to Kansas from New Jersey.Presentation on the MeekersJotham Meeker was a Baptist missionary to the Ottawa tribe when they relocated to Kansas. His influence on them was instrumental to the founding of Ottawa University. John Mark Lambertson gave an hour-long presentation on the Meekers.Broadway Plays OU For the rest of the evening, I enjoyed a revue of Broadway show tunes performed by current OU students as well as community people (including the new President of OU, Fred Snow).Back to the classroomOn Friday morning, alumni were invited to sit in on classes. At 9, I chose World History. At 10, I went to the World Religions class. At 11, I attended a class in Music History. |
