In my early boyhood years, long before my Scouting years, Jim Michel was my best friend. His mother and my mother were both friends long before either of us existed.
We remained friends over the years, but, going to different grade schools, we didn't become as close as was later the case with Don Moss. Besides sponsoring Troop One, the Baptist Church also was the home of a model railroad society that had an enormous layout in a room separated from the gym (where the troop met) by the boiler room.
Jim always remained a member of the troop, but was much more into the model railroading and didn't mind slipping away from the Scout meetings to go work on the model railroad set. (He lived near the railroad cut, so we also spent many hours of our youth watching the real trains.) I've always enjoyed trains, but they haven't been my obsession as was the case with Jim. Not that this was bad, after all, he grew up to occupy an administrative position with AMTRAK.
