During most, but not all, of my years in Troop One, Norman Martin was the Scoutmaster. There were a few years when his engineering job took him out of town and the Scoutmastership descended upon Don Moss' father, Bill Moss. A few years ago, Norman and Bill decided it would be nice to have a reunion of all of the boys that had been in Scouting with them, so we had a big Troop Reunion. Norman asked where I lived, and I responded that I lived in Great Bend, Kansas. As I started to explain where that was, he stopped me and told me that Great Bend is where he stayed during the time he was gone. He explained that he had worked on the engineering of the helium plant in Otis, Kansas (about 25 miles northwest of Great Bend) during the time of his absence from the troop. Needless to say, he didn't decide to settle in Great Bend, as I did, but he certainly knew where it was... long before I did.
