My education

From 1962 to 1966, I attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas. I earned a B.A. in 1966. I majored in speech with a very strong minor in economics. My two main professors have left the academic world to practice what they preached to me. My speech and debate professor, Dr. Michael S. Twedt, left O.U. to work as a public relations specialist for the Union Pacific Railroad. My economics professor, Dr. Wayne Angell, left O.U. to become a member of the Federal Reserve Board. He is now the chief economist for Bear Sterns. When people tell me you must go to a big university to get a good education, I laugh. My undergraduate courses weren't taught by graduate assistants. They were taught by people who really knew their subject.

From 1966 to 1968, I attended The University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. I started working on a master's degree in economics, but should have had calculus first. I then went up to the top of Mt. Oread, to the School of Education and earned a B.Sc.Ed. in language arts and social studies My major professor there was Dr. Oscar Haugh, who taught me a lot about teaching. He's currently retired and enjoys going to the retirement parties of the people he taught how to teach. My student teaching was at Ottawa High School

From 1971 to 1975, while teaching in Cunningham, Kansas, I attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma and earned my M.Ed. degree in history and political science. Although he wasn't my major professor, Dr. Manoucher Vahdat was my favorite. We disagreed on Constitutional Law issues, but did so amiably. I still enjoy discussing Constitutional Law, which is how I met Michael Troy of the First Amendment Center.

I have also taken several courses at Barton County Community College (Great Bend, Kansas) and Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.
