- About Betti Carol Van Epps Taylor

Betti Carol VanEpps-Taylor is an independent scholar and social historian with a special interest in the lives of people of color on the Northern Great Plains. She is a native South Dakotan, descended from homesteaders who arrived in eastern South Dakota in 1864. She holds a master's degree in history from the University of South Dakota and has taught history at Wayne State College, Nebraska. As a participant-observer of black life on the west coast and in Denver during the turbulent 1950s-1970s, through marriage to a conservative black activist, she is uniquely qualified to examine the life and work of Oscar Micheaux especially as he was influenced by his years on the unforgiving Great Plains. Ms. VanEpps-Taylor's research on people of color in Dakota Territory and South Dakota has appeared regularly in the proceedings of the Dakota History Conference and the West River History Conference, as well as in Emporia State University's Heritage of the Great Plains, and is the subject of a nearly completed book entitled Hiding in Plain Sight: The African American Experience in Dakota territory and South Dakota, 1800-2000. New work is represented in a soon-to-be published article in Kansas State University's Journal of the West deals with the little-known lives of the "tourist Indians" who lived and worked in Colorado's Garden of the Gods during the first half of the 20th century. At the present time, she lives and works in rural Buhl, Idaho.
