In the early 1990's, he got me interested in the Internet.

In the mid-1990's, we got on line through a local ISP known then as midusa.net. With our account came 5 mB of personal web space. I started filling that space with things of interest to me and that included my boyhood in Kearny. I posted some Kearny memories, mostly about Boy Scouts and about trains. Since we had the space, I decided to build a directory of other KHS alumni who had e-mail addresses and/or web pages.

Early in 1998, Tom put a server in his dorm room at the University of Kansas.

On December 31, 1998, we registered our own domain as shorock.com and pointed it at his server. We then moved the KHS alumni directory to that server.

As time went on, we improved the site by listing entries both alphabetically and chronologically by graduating class.

We've also continued to upgrade the server and its connectivity. It is now co-located at a professional racking service in Saint Louis, Missouri.

On December 24, 2001, we registered the virtual domain of kearnyalumni.com which is hosted on the shorock.com server. Unlike the earlier sites, this one is built upon a database of information, allowing easier cross-indexing. The new site allows you to see the entries by either current or old last name, by class, and even by geography. The site has been expanded beyond a simple alumni directory to include everything we can think of to make a perfect alumni web site, including message boards and places to share photos. We hope you like it and will tell your friends about it.
